The Lundby DIY doll’s house experience

Sponsored post Lundby kitchen photo shootYou may remember my last two posts about the amazing Lundby doll house that my daughter received for Christmas, but what you don't know is how we've officially become obsessed with all things Lundby.Lundby Before house shot

When the Lundby Smaland dollhouse first arrived, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I had done my research on the Lundby site and I knew I was going to love the Smaland doll’s house, but nothing prepared me for seeing it in person.  Every little detail was accounted for in exquisite miniature detail just waiting for a doll family to call it home.  Lundby Family portrait The kids were thrilled when this family moved in and we began to set it up for them to play. Hearing them exclaim about each little piece and delight in the fact that the house was “just like a real home” made me so happy. Lundby Uhaul move in dayAs they excitedly referenced the Lundby catalog and set the house up accordingly, something special happened: They began to use their imaginations. Can we put this here instead of there? Do we have a garbage can that the Lundbys could use? Does this have to be the kitchen? Where do the kids sleep?

The perfectionist in me wanted to set the house up just-so and not stray from the glossy Lundby catalog, but I just couldn’t squash their imaginative play. So, instead of setting it up as I had been picturing, we imagined an elaborate scenario in which Mr. Lundby was a fire fighter, Mrs. Lundby was expecting a brand new bundle of joy, and the Lundby children lived in a playroom loft. Lundby firefighterTheir squeals of laughter as they excitedly added to the story convinced me that I was correct: they didn’t need a collectible, they needed an outlet for designing a home entirely of their own making… with a little help from hubby and I.

I will admit that it took a bit of convincing before I would do anything permanent. Scared that I would regret altering the house, I would only do minor alterations. No glue, no cutting, and no painting allowed, just things that I could undo when we were done playing. But, slowly I came around to the idea of truly customizing when I started to see the potential in each new piece that we added.

The Lundby site gave me all the inspiration I needed with step-by-step how-tos for DIY wallpaper and creating art for the walls. But, once I committed to customizing, I took it a few steps further. I could have printed wallpaper off the Lundby site in a pattern of my choosing and framed a picture of the kids for the walls, but I really wanted to do something different for the house. Something where I could imagine myself living and where the Lundby family could truly call home. Lundby wallpaperingIt started with a trip to the local hobby store where the kids picked out scrapbook paper for the walls and some fun little supplies that I could repurpose for wall hangings, décor, and more. This led to us deciding that we wanted to lay out our dollhouse slightly different than the Lundby model home.

Specifically, we wanted to turn the new extension floor into the main floor and bring the kitchen down to the spare room so we could turn the bonus room into a great room with dining and living room combined. Did you follow all that?

Here's the kitchen before the remodel: Lundby Kitchen wallpaper beforeTo be fair, that is only half of the Lundby kitchen mixed in with some vintage Lundby pieces we scored on ebay {and ended up repurposing in our completed doll house}, but we had to make it look like a true fixer-upper.

And here's the after shot of the new kitchen {former spare bedroom on extension floor} with its new, more modern wallpaper: Lundby wallpaper in the kitchenThat drastic change got us really excited about the Lundby DIY project, which led to an impromptu trip to Tacoma to raid Tinkertopia, an artists supply store, and visit the Lundby display at Learning Sprout toys. A few huge shopping bags later and we were on our way home with enough little accessories to complete a few doll houses.

I will be featured on Dolls Get Crafty over the next few weeks showing many how-tos and DIY projects that you can create in your own Lundby house, but for now, I'm going to give you a sneak peek into the Lundby universe we have created.

Here's the bonus room before and after it was converted to a great room: Lundby Bonus Room Before
Lundby Great Room AfterIn the next few weeks I will show you how you can convert the white Lundby fireplace to this little beauty, share some tips for wallpapering, and show the completed great room after all the accessories are in place {if you like this re-do, the completed room will BLOW YOUR MIND}.

Here's a few more sneak peeks of our Lundby doll house: Sitting roomUsing the extension floor as a great room/dining room has freed up the space traditionally used as the dining room, so we made our family a little craft space and office area. This is part-way through the process so we've made some huge changes to this room, but this gives you a good idea of where we're going with the space.
Lundby craft room officeI can't even tell you how fun this project has been for the whole family. We've spent our days crafting little pieces for the dollhouse, searching our junk drawers and toy boxes, and taking all those pictures you see in the dollhouse of the Lundby family, and we've had so much fun. Lundby After shotMy daughter and I are the visionaries who can imagine amazing things from arguably worthless junk, and my husband is the one with the power tools who keeps us grounded by suggesting more realistic ways of solving our miniature problems. All in all, we're a pretty awesome team.

  1. My daughter loves everything pink, so I’m sure she’d like the bedroom with white furniture and pink and white striped wallpaper and the living room with the pink sitting room furniture. She also loves animals, so she’d probably want me to get her the aquarium and rabbit hutch sets to add on.

But man, whoever wins the house — hopefully will share pics of the spoils! 😀
