Holiday Prep Made Easy with Robert Welch Signature Series

A few weeks ago I got to go see chef Tom Douglas speak in Seattle and prepare a holiday meal.  Watching him slice and dice all the ingredients was mesmerizing and I spent most of the time staring at his cutting board trying to remember his technique.

As he was cooking, he said that he loves getting questions from fans and that the number one thing he gets asked is for recommendations on the “perfect” knife.  He continued to say that there is no “perfect” knife and what works for one person may not work for another, and then he illustrated his point by holding his larger hand up to the petite woman assisting him in the demo kitchen.

It was obvious even from a distance that they would probably prefer different knives based on their hand size and that got me thinking about my own knives.  I realized that while my husband loved our first set of knives he picked out when we were first dating {which are still considered top-of-the-line}, I had just never taken to them.  Sure, they were nice, quality knives, but they just didn’t feel right in my hand and I felt clumsy with them.

I was thrilled when I found Robert Welch Signature knives recently as they just fit my hand perfect.  They have a smooth, contoured handle with a solid heft to them that I like, but they also feel really agile and as if I can chop anything with ease.  While I’m certainly no Tom Douglas, I felt I could slice and dice with them more fluidly than ever before and using them made food prep fun.

But, as much as I love the Robert Welch knives, I assumed hubby would still prefer our old set.  I was incredibly surprised when he said he preferred them as well and even more so when he started raving about how they felt so good in his hand and how he loved the modern and streamlined look and feel.

I believe his words were they felt like “ninja knives”.  Yes, that’s a ringing endorsement.

Robert Welch Signature Knives

As you can imagine, my husband and I have very different sized hands, but because of the contoured design of the Robert Welch Signature knives they still manage to fit us both comfortably.  The Signature handle paired with the latest and greatest in Japanese blade technology has us both raving, especially in this season of cooking, baking, and preparing when we find ourselves in the kitchen a lot more than normal.

It’s really no wonder that Robert Welch Designs, a UK-based design firm, has been winning awards for their knives, utensils, and accessories both in the US and in Europe.  After having tried out their chef’s knife and carving set recently, it’s come in very handy for holiday prep and everyone who has picked either up has had the same reaction hubby and I did.

I love them so much that I’d like to eventually add their new 7in Santoku knife to our set as well as a boning knife and paring knife which would make everything I do in the kitchen a little easier.  After having tried these out and falling hard for them, I’m also excited to check out all 26 knives in the Robert Welch line.

Robert Welch Carving Set
Not sold on making the switch yet?  Here's some of the many features of the Robert Welch Signaure line:

  • The knives have been performance-tested by Sheffield’s leading test establishment and found to be in the world’s top 1% (of all knives tested) for initial sharpness and edge retention.
  • Each blade is honed and tempered to razor sharpness using World Edge Geometry inspired by master sword craftsmen from Japan, producing a precision blade edge for effortless cutting and slicing.
  • Fully forged and robotically engineered, the knives are manufactured from German DIN 1.4116 stainless steel and hardened to Rockwell 55-56.
  • The knives feature a full tang and the handles are made from Dupont™ material and molded precisely on to the full tang. Robotic technology ensures that each handle matches perfectly and all joints and surfaces are carefully finished to prevent the risk of food particles being trapped.

Robert Welch KnivesAnd, the Robert Welch line is about more than knives, they also have gorgeous kitchen accents that would be sure to wow this holiday.  Just look at these beautiful utensils and open kitchen rail – wouldn't they look great in any kitchen?

Robert Welch Utensils

I love their smooth, contoured handles that are comfortable for stirring and serving and I really love that they have an integrated hook top so you can hang them on an open kitchen hanging system.  Since we have a pretty extensive open kitchen set up, I love that I wouldn't need to do anything special to hang them.

Robert Welch also has a gorgeous set of salt and pepper mills that feature their award-winning CrushGrind ceramic mechanism that won't rust or corrode.  In fact, they are also 100% guaranteed for life, which is something I can get behind.

Not only are they great, quality pieces, they are also truly beautiful and would look great in any kitchen or even left on the dining room table as a functional piece of art.  I love that their minimalist design can fit with any decor and can actually be used for more than just salt and pepper – you can put numerous other spices inside that you use frequently and always have them at the ready.  You can also adjust the grind from fine to medium, coarse or very coarse depending on your taste.
