It was almost a year ago that I was talking with my teenage niece and I realized I was old. Not just a little old, but straight-up OLD. So, what made me feel so old? Specifically, it was the prom. My niece was getting ready for her first big school dance and we were talking dress ideas and I suggested some ideas that would have been amazing… if it was 2005.
It turns out a lot has changed in the past 10+ years in terms of prom style, which shouldn’t really be a surprise, but for some reason it really was. For my generation it wasn’t considered “formal” unless it was floor length, and we erred on the side of satin, solid fabrics without much that sparkled.
These days? It’s about shorter, sparkle-covered dresses that shimmer and shine. Designers these days aren’t scared of color, or patterns, of overlays, or of my favorite: lace. The result is some gorgeous dresses that would look great for prom and then worn again and again for family weddings, formal gatherings, and more. One look through the Macy’s website for prom styles and I am super jealous that I don’t have a prom to go to. Thankfully, the next generation needs my shopping expertise and I get to help all of my nieces get ready for prom. All of this is great practice for when my daughter will need my help in just a few short years and I’ll be heading into Macy’s with her to pick out her prom dress {sniff, sniff}.
It’s this reason I’m going to be one of the first in line to the Macy’s Alderwood’s Prom fashion show and shopping party this Saturday, April 2nd at 2pm. Not only will I be checking out the newest fashions to report back to my nieces, I will also be enjoying a live performance by Andie Case and enjoying some mini makeovers with the girls.
