Our matching girls

I love it when we meet new people and they will remark excitedly about the fact that my daughters are wearing matching clothing. The first question after that is usually to ask if we did it on purpose or inquire if it’s a special occasion. They are literally shocked when I then say that my girls have spent roughly 99% of the 2+ years they have known each other wearing matching clothing.  Carter's kissesWhat follows is usually a flood of questions wanting to know why they match, whose idea it was, and then they always want to know how on Earth I found so many outfits that match for the past two years.

I always tell them that "matching girls" was entirely my oldest's idea. When her sister was born in 2015, she wanted to make sure that everyone knew how excited she was about her baby sister and declared that they were going to match every day.

I thought that was cute, but I initially resisted because I had not anticipated “matching girls” was going to be an everyday thing and had only bought one outfit for the two of them that matched as well as them each having a pair of matching Toms shoes. So, for those first few weeks they relied heavily upon that initial matching outfit and a collection of accessories we had that just so happened to coordinate with each other nicely.6a0105362badb1970b01b8d14c23f4970c-800wiAt this point, I still thought the matching thing would be a phase that would be abandoned as soon as the new baby smell wore off, so I agreed to purchase only one more matching outfit in addition to a few we had been given as gifts. But, around month 2, it seemed like the desire to match had only gotten stronger, so I caved and bought a few more items so they wouldn't be wearing the same 5 outfits on repeat. My daughter was beyond thrilled, and I quickly got over my sadness that most of my baby’s clothing we had already bought was going to go unworn as I embraced the matchy-matchy-ness love. My girlsAt this point 2+ years in, matching sisters has become so much their thing that I never dare buy single items for them anymore. Their entire closet is grouped into twos and their drawers are stacks of pajamas, pants, shirts, and socks that are folded around each other to make grabbing matching clothing as easy as possible.

Every morning, the girls decide what they want to wear and then they come in with the outfit for me to get my little one dressed. I love that this way they are still making the choice every single day to match, and I adore how excited they still get once their outfits are on and they squeeze each other tight and say "matching girls!". Although I initially resisted matching girls, I can honestly say that I am dreading the day that they decide they are done with it. And, not just because it would mean completely re-doing their closets and making sure they didn't choose the same outfit on the same day. Matching girls is just who they are, and I love them for that.
