Kid-friendly crafting with the BeaverBot C2 Cutter

A big thank you to the makers of the BeaverBot C2 cutter for sending us the B. Rex for my kids to adore. As always no form of monetary compensation was received in exchange for this Rave Review.

My kids truly don’t know how good they have it. They are growing up in a world where makers can create just about anything they dream up, and age is getting less and less of a barrier. In fact, there are so many new technological advances that not only are ideal for children, they are actually marketed to them. Case in point: the BeaverBot C2 cutter, a child-friendly cardboard tool that makes 3D construction easy, even for the youngest makers.

My son was the first one to find the BeaverBot C2 cutter, and he was excited about it for our miniature making as well as all of the random fun crafts we make each month. He sent me the link to the site the week that I got an email from the company wanting me to review one of their kid safe cutters – either the Vivy or B. Rex. We received the B. Rex and he immediately was a hit.

My youngest daughter and her friends love to make cardboard accessories for their make-believe play, and up until the moment that B. Rex arrived, those accessories were fairly primitive. Cardboard is so much harder to cut than paper or card stock, and kid-safe scissors can’t handle thick cardboard at all, so their cardboard cut outs end up looking jagged and misshapen. But, when you hand the BeaverBot C2 Cutter to four crafty kids, they can create some truly awesome creations.

I love that it inspires independent and meaningful play without requiring too many rules and restrictions – something that isn’t readily found even in many child-friendly crafts. Whenever we open a craft kit, I feel like it’s a lot of work for the adults in charge and the kids end up getting bored. But, not with the BeaverBot C2 Cutter. With almost no instruction, kids can easily figure it out, get their own recycled art supplies {yay for using recyclable materials!} and spend hours building and creating without any screens involved.

What is the BeaverBot C2 Cutter?

The BeaverBot C2 cutter is a kid-safe cardboard {and more!} cutter than is perfect for ages 4+. It features a safety blade with no exposed sharp edges or blades as well as child-safe tools. All of this is housed in an adorable critter/themed design that is durable and easy to use even for youngsters. It can be used to cut cardstock, corrugated cardboard, felt, denim, leather, foam and so much more, making it a multi-purpose crafting tool. Most 3mm or thinner materials will work just fine in the C2, but be sure to test the material first just in case. Also, a 5mm module is coming soon for even thicker materials – woohoo!

This pairing of kid-safe cutting with a ruggedized design with a durable aluminum top plate means that you can let kids fully utilize it with multiple craft mediums without worry. Not only does it allow kids to easily cut and shape materials to create beautiful designs without all the risks of traditional tools, but it is also easy to master even for young children and honestly as goof-proof as a product for kids could possibly be. A smart anti-jam open chute design means almost no troubleshooting, and a cardboard shavings collection bin means that there is very little mess left behind after creating.

What kid-safe features does the BeaverBot C2 cutter have?

The BeaverBot C2 cutter has numerous kid-safe features, including tools for poking holes that are only sharp enough to pierce cardboard and tools for helping you fold and score cardboard easily. It also has two speed modes – slow and fast so you can adjust it to your child’s capabilities.

Speaking of speed modes:

The turbo mode (1500 rpm) is for fast cutting and standard mode (800 rpm) is for detailed work. But, because some materials cut better slower, some cut better faster, you will need to experiment a bit with different materials and different speeds. These two speeds can be switched back and forth with the toggle of a switch, so you can change up the two speeds no problem at all.

Who would you recommend the BeaverBot to?

Honestly, even though it’s marketed at children, I feel like any crafty person would love it. I’ve found myself using it multiple times, and I’m obviously a grown adult. The first time was for birthday décor for a party we were throwing, and after that I used it to mock-up a dollhouse roof {more on that coming soon!}, some toys for the kids, and then I tried my hand at using it for some miniatures for our houses. Not only is it fun for kids, I love that it’s also helping my kids develop their creativity while working on their motor skills – it’s a huge bonus that it encourages them to used recycled art supplies!

Does it cut that much better than scissors?

Yes, it has a smoother and cleaner cut than scissors do, especially when compared to scissors that you would let children use. The BeaverBot has a finer cutting edge and a thinner kerf for neater results which is perfect for detailed projects and miniature models like we make. Just look at this intricate dino skeleton that we made from recycled cardboard with the various small bones.

Is it hard to store?

At 270 x 270 x 150 mm and weighing in at 4.63 lbs, the BeaverBot C2 cutter is ready to earn its place on any crafting table or desk. But, if desk space is an issue, it is easily stashed away on a shelf or cart. It’s square-ish shape makes it so it fits nicely on bookcases or shelving units, and since the top is mostly flat except the actual cutting module, you can even stack on top of it with a little ingenuity if you place a buffer around to account for the module thickness.
