Is your weekend shaping up to be INCREDIBLE? It is if you’re planning on a showing of INCREDIBLES 2! Coming fourteen years after the original, but picking up right where they left off, INCREDIBLES 2 is in theaters now, and I’m so incredibly excited. See what I did there?
About INCREDIBLES 2
Literally picking up right where they left off, we find the Parr family of super heroes has seemingly not aged and is still sadly dealing with a society which isn’t so sure they have a place for heroes.
I loved how they set up the continuing negative attitude towards Supers, and it came full circle from The Incredibles when the public was sick of all of their ongoing legal battles and the continuing damage to their city. This was one of my favorite aspects of the first film, so I was really happy to see them revisiting that and not just ignoring it as a thing of the past.
But this time around the Incredibles have a wealthy benefactor in Winston Deavor {Bob Odenkirk} and his sister Evelyn {Catherine Keener} who want to show the world that heroes are needed. They decide the soft touch of Elastigirl may be the best way to win over the public, so Helen Parr {voice of Holly Hunter} is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back into public favor.
Helen off fighting crime alone leaves Bob Parr {voice of Craig T. Nelson} home taking care of the family in a stark reversal of the first film. As Bob navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet {voice of Sarah Vowell}, Dash {voice of Huck Milner} and baby Jack-Jack. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers.
During Helen’s mission a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens to leave the Supers even worse off than they were before. Frozone {voice of Samuel L. Jackson} as well as a whole new crop of Supers by their side might not even be enough to save the day, and ultimately, save themselves.
Our take on INCREDIBLES 2
The Incredibles has long been one of my favorite Pixar movies so I for one was really excited for this next installment. This made it a little awkward when on our way to see the sequel the kiddos announced from the back of the car that they never actually saw the first movie. Oops, that’s some serious parental oversight there.
But, even going in with only basic knowledge of the original movie, INCREDIBLES 2 was a huge hit with the whole family. The kids haven’t stopped talking about all the funny scenes and which parts were their first favorite and second favorite, and so on and so on. Apparently the second movie is just as enjoyable without having seen the original, but I think it goes without saying that you should 100% still see the first movie.
Personally, I just love the look and feel of the Incredibles world with the Art Deco styling, which reminds me of older comic books. On top of that, the story is great and it actually has a real depth with resonant messages. Of course, it also has lots of humor and action if that’s more your speed, but the best part is that you don’t have to choose because it has both and does a really good job on both fronts.
The end verdict is that INCREDIBLES 2 was definitely worth the wait. I now definitely owe the kiddos a screening of the original movie, not that I’m complaining of course.
