My son is crazy about dinosaurs and about vehicles of all kinds, so I knew he would think that the Switch & Go Dinos were basically the coolest thing ever. Whenever he sees the brightly colored dino covered boxes when we’re out shopping, he can’t help but hug them all. Of course I couldn't say no when offered a set of Switch & Go Dinos to review right before his birthday.
If you haven’t seen them in stores yet, Switch & Go Dinos are robotic dinosaurs that transform into various vehicles with just a few motions. When in dino mode, they roar like prehistoric animals, and when in car/truck/flying object mode, their engines rev and they make vrooming noises. Pretty much the best toy ever, in a little boy’s eyes.
I already knew that my son would think it was pretty awesome if a few Switch & Go Dinos came to live with us, so I was sure they would be the perfect birthday present for him this September. My daughter recognized this as well and decided that of all the other toys on the market, she really wanted to buy him one of these dinos for his birthday.
Both of their wishes were granted when a package bearing Jagger the T-Rex and an assortment of little Switch & Go Dinos arrived at our house last week. Being that it’s not my son’s birthday just yet, he has no idea that we are currently sharing our space with robotic dinos who also switch into vehicles, but my daughter sure does.
She got to have a sneak peek the other day as we unpackaged and unboxed all of the dinos to get them ready for the birthday party {yes, my son HATES packaging} and she was in love immediately. I had thought that she wouldn’t be that interested in the dinos considering that unicorns, ponies, and fairies are top of her list of favorite things, but she was surprisingly smitten with them as soon as she saw them.
And, then when she realized that Jagger the T-Rex talked, moved, had animated LCD screen eyes, and fired his “fireball”, she was crazy for him. I taught her a few commands so she could make Jagger do certain functions and she laughed and laughed at all that we were able to make him do, especially when he would stomp his feet and roar back at her.
I was a bit worried she would have a problem giving clear commands but we found that the voice recognition software did I good job picking up her commands as well as my own. The only thing she had a problem with was waiting for him to respond before giving orders so they often were talking over each other on accident.
When in truck mode, Jagger is a super cool construction tool that has a drill bit, an animated driver on the LCD screen, a rotating crane, and even a mini transforming bulldozer. You can make the driver go forward, backwards, stop working, and even fire the drill bit as well as all sorts of other functions.
If you know me, you know that I'm not huge on loud toys. Kids are plenty loud all on their own so I tend to lean towards quiet toys that use imaginations instead of sound systems. But, I do make exceptions for toys that the kids are truly learning from, and the VTech Switch & Go Dinos are great fine motor and problem-solving toys for preschool aged kids, as well as being a great command and respond toy.
But, for those of you who have banned talking toys of any kind, you will be happy to know that the sound has two levels on the Switch & Go Dinos. And, not only can you turn it down for phone call and the like, you can also turn it completely off if you're having quiet time. Of course, it does take away from the coolness a bit on silent, but I still appreciate that it's an option.
