Explore the ’50s with Maryellen, the new BeForever doll from American Girl

Sponsored postHave you ever felt like you were born in the wrong decade? For me, my heart has always belonged to the ‘50s. My parents were born in the 1950s so I grew up hearing stories of the way things used to be and I always felt a connection to the decade that shaped their generation. I spent countless hours listening to their 45s, exploring their childhood closets for clothing gems left behind when everyone moved away from home, and pining for a decade I never personally experienced. 50s Diner with MaryellenMy love of the ‘50s has only been renewed with the arrival of the newest American Girl’s BeForever™ character, Maryellen Larkin. Only now it’s better because I get to share that love with my children. Maryellen on swing smilingI don’t think it’s possible to be more in love with Maryellen. With her gorgeous strawberry blond hair, her brown eyes, and her authentic 1950s outfit featuring a striped dress, a lacy-knit shrug with a monogrammed "M", black shoes, and a ribbon bow for her hair, she’s exactly what I think of when I picture my mom and my aunts during the ‘50s. Classic and all-American, Maryellen is even more beautiful in person than she is online and in catalogue. 50s diner sitting with Maryellen

Meet Maryellen Larkin

Maryellen is an optimistic, energetic girl growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1954. As one of the middle children of 6 kids, Maryellen struggles with being seen as a “big kid” while dealing with issues of conformity versus individuality. By following her heart instead of the crowd, Maryellen strives to be true to herself even when it means going again expectations. Maryellen American Girl bannerAs much as I love Maryellen’s spunk and determination in the stories, I also really love that her very best friend is a neighbor boy, Davy. Since my son still adores all things American Girl, I really appreciate that he now has a boy character to enjoy when we read Maryellen’s story together as a family.   Boy with American Girl DollThrough Maryellen’s stories, we can experience the trials of the time and learn about the era that saw tremendous growth and change in post-war America. With the rise of suburbia , new technology such as TV, and the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll, the ‘50s have a rich history that I can’t wait to explore with them. 50s diner jukebox with MaryellenI love that by using Maryellen’s products and stories I can help my children better understand their grandparents’ generation during “the baby boom” and it creates numerous talking points for them to explore with their grandparents. As excited as I am about the doll herself, I love that she has given us huge potential for bonding with Grandma and including her in our American Girl trips and café dates. 50s diner burger with MaryellenAnd, by exploring Maryellen’s world together, we get to experience the good old fashioned fun of poodle skirts, malt shops, and the joys of hearing your favorite record play at the local diner.
To kick off our adventures with Maryellen, we planned a fun trip to a local ‘50s style diner so we could share a malt with the new doll and get acquainted with her story. 50s diner milkshake with MaryellenOf course, we couldn’t pass up the new Pretty Poodle Dress for girls so my daughter could match Maryellen’s Poodle Skirt Outfit, complete with saddle shoes. Maryellen’s poodle skirt ends up being a big deal in her story when her mom buys it to recognize Maryellen’s desire to be treated as more grown up, so I thought it was a fitting splurge for my daughter to rock as a thank you for all the help she has been in her new role as a big sister of two siblings.  50s Diner Maryellen dollBe still, my heart. 50s dancing with MaryellenBut, it’s not just the BeForever Maryellen character that is new. Along with the doll, there are some really awesome accessories you can get for your Maryellen doll – including a real jukebox that plays 50s style tunes that you can plug your music player into or a television console that you can hook up to your iPad. Also of note is the 30-pc diner set that my kids could play with for HOURS if I let them. Seriously, can kids toys get any cooler than this? Maryellen Jukebox Doll Set-LRAlso new are the Maryellen two-book series that tell her story and The Sky’s the Limit: My Journey with Maryellen, that lets you go back in time to go on adventures with Maryellen in a choose-your-own-adventure fashion. Since my daughter is crazy about chapter books, I love that the Maryellen book series has given us even more opportunities to read together and learn more about the era. Maryellen reading on swingAre you lucky enough to live driving distance from an American Girl store? You should definitely check out the Maryellen Retail Events at select stores across the country where you can explore the fabulous '50s with free Maryellen-inspired events. We popped into the event during her launch and enjoyed a free craft with a special gift for the kiddos. 50s diner milkshake shared with MaryellenWant to explore Maryellen's world? Check out her page on AmericanGirl.com and see why we are crazy for her and all of her accessories and gear. For parents and teachers, a free downloadable Maryellen Learning Guide will soon be available to explore these themes and issues from the 1950s. If you haven’t checked out this section of the website, I would highly recommend it. It gives you great questions you can ask your kids about the American Girl Doll characters to help them get even more from each character’s unique story. 50s diner with Maryellen and mini milkshake
As for this girl? I think it's clear that she's more than smitten with her new playmate.
