Eitech/Teifoc Building Sets

I’ve always loved building things, starting with basic blocks as a child, then moving on to models of buildings, planes and cars.  After that came remote control cars, then as I grew older I started working on real cars, electronics, and construction projects.  It’s pretty amazing to see such a straight connection through all these toys to some of the aspects of myself I am Eitechproudest of, and more importantly, pay my bills with.

When I first saw the building sets from Eitech, I instantly knew I had to play with them.  I also knew that if my kids could wrestle them away from me, they would learn a lot while enjoying them.  While my kids are on the younger side, I always look for things that I can do with them that will help them with their fine motor skills and encourage their love of building, and Eitech definitely fits that bill.

The bulk of Eitech’s products allow you to build vehicles and structures out of various metal pieces fastened together with nuts, bolts, screws and washers.  But, what’s cool is that Eitech youngEitech also carries a full line of building sets for younger kids that are made of plastic that are easier for your little builder to handle.  Whichever set you choose, you will love that they all come with all the tools you need to build, as well as plans for one or more things you can build.  Of course, if you are feeling creative you can always make your own design, or combine pieces from multiple sets for some truly massive projects.

We received the Classic Construction Vehicles Set, which has instructions for three different vehicles, but after scanning the directions we decided on building the crane truck since it looked the biggest.  Each step of the Eitech movingconstruction is shown in easy to understand diagrams with lines showing exactly where each part goes, and since the metal pieces consist of a grid of holes it is very easy to count out where the hole you are looking for is.

Throughout the building process, you are shown the multitude of ways that nuts and bolts can be used to form various connections from clamped down tight to looser ones that allow movement without coming apart.  This leads to the fact that once we built our crane truck we could actually play with it.

With tracks that roll and a crane arm that spins and extends, this is no model that will simply sit on a shelf looking cool – it’s made to be used.  But, then when you are done playing with it, it’s actually pretty fun to take it apart, too.  Taking it one step further, Eitech even created a series of playsets that include electric motors with solar panels to run them off of.  We are looking forward to getting one of these sets once the kids are really ready for it, and I have no doubt that it will be as fun for us as a family as the Classic Construction Vehicles Set has been.

TeifocAnother line from Eitech is their Teifoc series which is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.  We’ve all played with plastic construction bricks before, but I bet you’ve never played with real bricks and mortar.  That’s right, Teifoc has real miniature bricks, complete with a little trowel for setting the mortar just right.

Just like the metal building sets, the brick sets come with all the parts and tools you need for making the plans included with the set, or you can easily make your own creations.  With full, half and flat bricks, roof shingles and decorative pieces, as well plastic doors and windows, you can really make some detailed structures.

TeifocI’ve actually always wanted to try building something out of bricks, but haven’t ever been able to commit to a full scale project, so I was really excited to try this set out.  The directions include a full scale first layer diagram, and then a couple more pictures of when there is a change in the pattern, but other than that there are little instructions – you just stagger the bricks and stack ‘em up.

Once we got going, it was amazing how relaxing and enthralling the building process was, I even commented at one point that I felt like I was working on a zen garden.  My daughter and I would take turns seeking out the next piece and spreading the mortar and we both just loved every minute of it.  It was fun having her recognize the patterns as we went along and seeing her working with such small detail and focus.  Once finished, we had a cute little Teifoc house with a partial fence that we really built, just like the real thing, only smaller.

At this point, we can leave the house together on display, or if we want to build something else we simply soak it in water and the mortar will dissolve away, allowing us to start all over.  The bricks and mortar are both 100% natural so there are no chemicals or solvents needed, which was something I definitely appreciated since we were doing it as a family.

Close up Teifoc
Overall, we really loved both of these sets and had a great time building as a family.  I know that my kids will get even more from the sets as they get older and are able to handle more of the detail building, but for right now they like being included in building and getting the basics of following the instructions.  I am happy that as we pull these out over and over, we can choose different designs and create new vehicles and buildings each time or we can choose to make our own and really get creative, which will keep it fresh every time we play.
